SwTPC 6800 Clone?

Postby toml_12953 » January 26th, 2020, 9:32 pm

I saw your video on the SwTPC 6800. Any chance of a Clone in the future? I always thought that was a cool computer and the Kilobaud articles by Peter Stark really made me want one.

I’ve thought about it in the past, but without the front panel of the Altair or IMSAI, there’s not much to the physical computer other than making an accurate looking box. If anything, I’d lean more to duplicating the computer with cards and everything, but that’s a much bigger job.

I would be interested in this.

My current retro computing collection goal is to have 1 example computer for each of the common processors and it seems like the 6800 is going to be one of the hardest to find. The 6809 seems fairly popular and the 68000 did really well but the 6800 doesn't seem to have made much of a splash.

Wikipedia tells me that MITS made a 6800 based computer with a front panel so that could be a direction to go in.
